Sanskrit Name:  रोहिणी (Rohini). One meaning of Rohini is “the red one,” indicating beauty, passion, and a unique charm.

Planetary Ruler:  Moon. In Vedic theology the moon is considered a manifestation of the mind of God. It is associated with creativity, the mind, and the emotions. The moon is especially significant in Vedic astrology, where a person’s sign is considered their moon sign.  

Nakshatra Group:  Humanlike. Nakshatras are divided into three classes — monsters, humans, and gods. Rohini is a humanlike nakshatra. People in this group are generally hardworking and motivated to achieve material success. Although they are generally kind, they can also be vindictive and self-serving.

Zodiac Sign:  Taurus. Taurus natives are light-hearted and likeable individuals fond of sensual pleasures. They are reliable, obedient, and generous.

Vedic Story of Rohini Nakshatra:

Prajapathi had 33 daughters. He gave them to Soma. Soma only got associated with Rohini, so he returned other daughters in anger. Then, Soma followed them and asked for them to come back. Prajapathi said that he would not return them unless Soma swears that he will equally associate with all of them. Soma took the oath and Prajapathi returned the daughters. Even then, Soma could only get associated with Rohini. Due to this act and the unfulfillment of promise, illness seized Soma. Soma approached all the daughters of Prajapathi respectfully.

The daughters said, “Let’s choose the boon. But will you equally associate with us?”. For Soma, they (the daughters) offered this oblation to Aadhithya (because the 33 daughters wanted Soma to survive). Aadhithya freed Soma from his evil. Now, Soma shall offer his oblation to Aadhithya. He shall also recourse to Aadhithya with their share. Therefore, he shall offer himself to Aadhithya on the New Moon day. It appears that some are waxing but Aadhithya makes him wax. The Puronuvakya is ‘He is born ever new’. The Yadnya is the cycle that the Aadhithya makes Soma wax. Soma makes himself wax.
