Sanskrit Name:  अश्लेषा (Ashlesha). One meaning of Ashlesha is a “tight embrace,” indicating sensuality, attachment, and a seductive personality.

Planetary Ruler: Mercury. This planet is associated with the intellect, literature, logic, artistic expression, and commerce.

Nakshatra Group:  Monstrous. Nakshatras are divided into three classes — monsters, humans, and gods. Ashlesha is a monstrous nakshatra. People in this group are generally intuitive, strong-willed, and assertive. They may be prone to anger and violence.

Zodiac Sign:  Cancer. Cancerians are wise and perceptive, and gifted in their ability to read other people. They are nurturing, creative, and empathetic.

Deity:  Vritrasura. In Vedic theology, Vritrasura is the powerful enemy of the king of the gods, Indra. Although he is Indra’s enemy, Vritrasura is also regarded as an exceptional spiritualist and great devotee of God.

Symbol:  Serpent. This represents divine wisdom, cleverness, danger, and sensuality.

Power:  To control poison. Ashlesha has destructive powers, like poison does, and also the ability to restrain this destructive power. This nakshatra also bestows the ability to tolerate.

Resonant Syllables:  In India, the birth nakshatra is traditionally used as one means of choosing the name of a child. The corresponding syllables for the four quarters (padas) of Ashlesha are Dee (डी), Do (डू), De (डे), and Doe (डो). The syllable of a person’s first name is sometimes used when calculating an astrological chart if the time of birth is unknown.

Vedic Story -

Anant means infinite and Shesha means remainder. Shesha was born to sage Kashyap and his wife Kadhru. Kadhru means reddish brown. Kadhru gave birth to thousands of snakes out of which Shesha was the eldest. Many of Shesha’s brothers were cruel and were inflicting harm to others. Shesha was disgusted by the cruel acts of his brothers, so he left his mother and other relatives. He lived on air and meditated in places including Gandhamadhana, Badhrikashrama, Gokarna, Pushkara, and Himalaya. His penances were so severe that his flesh skin and muscles dried up to merge into his frame. Brahma convinced Shesha’s penance and asked Shesha to request a boon.

Shesha asked that he shall be able to keep his mind under control so that he can continue to perform penances. Brahma accepted the request and asked him for a favour. Brahma requested Shesha to go beneath the earth and stabilize it. Shesha is known to support the earth even today. 

• Nagas are the divine serpents.
• The first thing when we think of Ashlesha is the serpents or a snake, but we are actually going to go deeper than just this animal.
• We will look at the yoni animal of Ashlesha, which is a male cat.
• A male cat or cats in general are extremely moody, they won’t come to you when you call them, they don’t just want to be snuggled when you feel like doing but if you discipline a cat by forking them or slapping them they would suddenly turn against you and run away.
• A dog on the other hand is completely opposite. But cats are affectionate and loving but only when they feel they want it.
• There are two different types of cats in the world: outdoor and indoor.
• An Ashlesha person either is extremely independent or wants to explore everything or they are forced to be homebodies because the owner doesn’t want them to leave and get lost.

• On one fine night Kadru placed a wager with the family of Vinata, mother of Garuda and Aruna (charioteers of Vishnu and Sun god, respectively).
• The mother of nagas secretly tells her sons to cover the trail of Sun with black color and by doing this they won the bet and made Vinata and her sons their slaves.
• The nagas demanded the elixir of immortality from Indra through Garuda and Aruna and mentioned that if they can fulfill their wish they will set them free.
• After they spoke to Indra about their situation he agreed to give them the elixir but with a trick.
• Once Kadru and Nagas were handed the elixir they were freed from their oath but Indra quickly came and took the pot from them but in the process a single drop spill on the ground and nagas quickly went to the ground to lick the drop but at the same time the sharp blade of grass split their tongue and hence they have the forked tongue.
• Since this time, they went underground in a place called Naga-loka, which is extremely beautiful and sensual with many gems and ornaments, which contain the spiritual vibration of this Earth.
• They love being around such gems, which helps them to understand the highest of consciousness.
• Knowing this history of Nagas, which is extremely small part of their entire existence we can see that Ashlesha people when run by a stepmother will always find her wrath as a master slave relationship.
